Computationally Feasible Query Answering over Spatio-thematic Ontologies

چکیده
Providing query answering facilities at the conceptual level of a geographic data model requires deduction, and deduction in geographical information systems (GIS) is a demanding task due to the size of the data that are stored in secondary memory. In particular, this is the case for deductive query answering w.r.t. spatio-thematic ontologies, which provide a logical conceptualization of an application domain involving geographic data. For specific logics (socalled lightweight description logics) and query languages (conjunctive queries) the query answering problem can be solved by compiling the ontology-based query into an SQL query that is posed to the database. Thus, ontology-based query answering becomes as feasible as standard database query answering. In the literature, this kind of query answering by compilation is formalized using the notion of first-order logic (FOL) rewritability. In this paper we show that lightweight description logics such as DL-Lite can be combined with spatial calculi such as the region connection calculus such that FOL rewritability is retained and the expressive power is sufficient for modeling important aspects of GIS data. Keywords-description logics; qualitative spatial reasoning; deductive query answering; FOL rewritability

Combining Lightweight Description Logics with the Region Connection Calculus
Providing reasoning in GIS domains is a demanding task due to the size of the data that are stored in secondary memory. This is also the case for query answering over spatio-thematic ontologies which act as an interface to the GIS data and filter unintended models. Solving this problem by compiling the ontology into an SQL query works only in those cases in which such a compilation, first-order...
متن کاملCombining DL-Lite with Spatial Calculi for Feasible Geo-thematic Query Answering
First order logic (FOL) rewritability is a desirable feature for query answering over geo-thematic ontologies because in most geoprocessing scenarios one has to cope with large data volume. Hence, there is a need for combined geo-thematic logics that provide a sufficiently expressive query language allowing for FOL rewritability. The DL-Lite family of description logics is tailored towards FOL ...

With the advent of publicly available geospatial data, ontology-based data access (OBDA) over spatial data has gained increasing interest. Spatiorelational DBMSs are used to implement geographic information systems (GIS) and are fit to manage large amounts of data and geographic objects such as points, lines, polygons, etc. In this paper, we extend the Description Logic DL-Lite with spatial obj...
